Why BadDNA?

A brief history

BadDNA is a moniker that our group leader has used since his days as a PhD student, working on DNA from old dead stuff at the Smithsonian in the early 1990's.  BadDNA is a description of the DNA that could be obtained from the samples he has focused on (museum samples) and the specific kind of DNA he focused on (weird repetitive elements that can do bad things if they get into the wrong part of your genome).  Eventually, he obtained a customized license plate with BADDNA on it, which served to entertain many other drivers, served as warning about (and maybe excuse for) his driving, was a dig on his parents, and was a warning about his children.  So, you see, BadDNA works on many levels...

Where we are today

Today our team still works with DNA & RNA from all sorts of samples.  We limit our work to only organisms that have nucleic acids.  Our goal is develop and use current DNA sequencing technologies, often developed to solve problems in human health, to solve problems throughout the diversity of life, but with a One Health focus.
